The Final Post (Essentials Blue Fall 08)

For: The Institute Of Contemporary And Emerging Worship Studies, St. Stephen’s University, Essentials Blue Online Worship Theology Course with Dan Wilt (ICEWS, eb 08)

This piece, Because You Are, puts the spotlight on God as Creator. He is the author of all life. Through this course, I’ve been hugely impacted by seeing in fresh ways, how our Creator God has made us in His image. We have been given the amazing capacity to gather up all that creation is doing and saying, and give voice to it, reflecting it all back to Him. We are given a mind to understand He is worthy, and therefore we choose to worship Him. (1)

We are also caught up in the groaning of all creation, as we long for redemption. We recognise that “God Himself, by the Spirit, dwells in our hearts as we resonate with the pain of the world”. (2) We are to be messengers modelling the message of putting the world to rights, as we ourselves “are put to rights by the same healing love.” (3)

We are the new creation who expresses true humanity through Jesus. We ‘realise and extend creation through human re-enactment’.(4)  As those fully alive, we respond with worship, wonder and adoration understanding that “worship makes you more truly human”.(5)  We respond with belief, embracing things we cannot see, the things of His Kingdom, to release them on earth. In doing so, we reflect God’s redemptive mission..

I would use this in any gathered worship context, as a tool to reflect on Creator God, and on the invitation He’s given His children in His redemptive story.

I plan to use this with our worship leaders, as part of extending our thinking towards including more visual/sensory expressions.

I have intentionally chosen a form of media (i.e. Movie Maker) that I have personally not ever used before (normally, I would invite someone “skilled” to do this for me). I felt that it was part my commitment to this learning adventure, moving into areas that I am not necessarily familiar with.

1. NT Wright, Simply Christian, Part 2, Staring at the Sun. Wright amplifies this thought based on the activity of worship in Revelation 4 and 5.

2. NT Wright, Simply Christian, p 139

3. NT Wright, Simply Christian, p 175

4. Levinson, Creation and the Persistence of Evil, p xxi

5. NT Wright, Simply Christian, p127

Postscript:

I have been really challenged about how word-based our expressions of worship can be. I have been struck by some people in our community who are unable to read well, and considering how to find ways to engage their expression. There’s also been a challenge for me personally, as someone who loves words…to live with restraint at times. This piece also symbolizes my personal reminder and pursuit to live in simplicity and restraint.

Themes: God as Creator, Humans as Sub-Creators; Creation Theology; God’s redemptive story.

We’re ready to roll!

I’m excited to let your know about the Aussie vineyard worship site. The site is now “live” and ready for you to explore.

The address is www.vineyardworship.org.au

As a member, you can log into the site, update your bio and upload new songs all by yourself. When you sign-up as a member, we’ll email you a User Guide which should help explain how the new site works.

If you can find your name in the contributors search, that means you have already been signed up – your login details and User Guide will be emailed out to you shortly.

Have a look around and let us know what you think – or post a suggestion on the forum.

A big thanks to Mark Barrett and his team for the many hours creating this funky site – now it’s up to us to make it work by adding our fingerprints.

We are especially waiting for those new songs we know are out there.

It’s really easy, go on…

Beautiful News Online

Matt Redman’s new CD Beautiful News is online on worshipmusic radio for a limited time. It’s the complete album so I’d encourage you to have a listen while it’s available.

PS and if you haven’t visited the Passion Conference 07 main sessions (worship and teaching) then you have till this Friday, as they’ll be stopping the online availability after that.

Carols

How much do we love Dan Wilt?

Each year he adds even more layers of encouraging us towards fresh worship expression during the Christmas season…this year he has put up video training files to go alongside the simple chords for carols. As he says, “these carols chord charts actually work for guitarists, worship leaders, and bands. They are in tempos and keys which will work for you and your community’.

And ah, here’s the link (oops!) Thanks Peter…I’m a bit brain dead!

AVCA Worship Website

As you may have noticed, the AVCA website has gone through a number of changes this year.

As a result, the music library has not been available over recent months so it is with great joy that I announce that a new, updated version which will be going public in January 2007.

If you are part of the Aussie Vineyard worship community, and if you have songs that you’d like to share, this will be a very easy, accessible way to do it.

Members will be able to add/edit and delete their files to the music library as well as have access to their bio, worship blog, other resources, even a calendar for our events. You’ll be able to link your music to your own Myspace page or your church’s page, or whatever links you’d like to point us to.

A music player will be incorporated into the site which will randomly play songs found in the music library.  Members will be able to skip, pause and play the songs available.

So watch this space, and spread the word to any songwriters, worship leaders, worship team members or people interested in hearing new songs. If you have any suggestions, please send them into me before we lock in the features, layout and design.

And in the meantime, start recording those songs, so that they are ready for January when it is set to launch!
